Reduction of such sprawl is a major challenge for urban policies. Favoured by vigorous economic growth since the 2000s, Oran, as well as other major Algerian cities, has experienced important and rapid urbanization that makes the process of urban sprawl irreversible. This article presents the unsuccessful attempts initiated by various urban policies and urban planning instruments engaged in Oran to control the pace of urban growth that has become a disturbing phenomenon, and to ensure integrated and sustainable urban development for the future. |
