description This article reports on a research project in political philosophy of education, history of ideas and exploration of the theoretical paradigm of inspirational figures for (thinking) education. We take a closer look at Raymond Aron, and show that he probably has more grounds for claiming the title of inspirational figure for democratic socialization than he is sometimes given credit for. We look at Aron's experience in rediscovering Tocquevillian thought on modernity as a counterpoint to that of Marx, and in structuring public debate around the opposition between democracy and totalitarianism (1). We then return to the analysis and understanding of modernity and democratic individualism that Aron developed in his essay on May 68 (2). Finally, we outline the lineaments of a specifically Aronian political philosophy of education, and what makes it particularly relevant to today's thinking on democratic socialization.
