| description | Based on the case study of local businesses created by racialized French people in Patong, Thailand, this article questions the forms of racialization and categorization among the French people and how they are reconfigured in Phuket. It shows how the production of space and its appropriation partly enables racialized French people to free themselves from the racism and the discriminations they endure in France. They experience this touristic “elsewhere” as less constraining because it allows them to assert the diversity of their identifications. Studying this place, called “les 4000” or the “French quarter” thus highlights how power relations and recognition issues question who is legitimate to consider oneself and be labeled “French” in Thailand. |
