| description | In the hybrid context of literary bilingualism, the practice of translating migrant literature provides an opportunity to rethink the subjective dimension of translation through the prism of the imaginary. In fact, the socio-symbolic (re)elaboration of the relations between language and subject as well as the identitary issues linked to migrant writing require a new interdisciplinary approach bringing together perspectives from anthropology, poetics and studies on the imaginary. It is, in particular, the linguistic imagination that reveals itself to be a fundamental factor in the poetics of an exiled author who decides to abandon his mother tongue. The translation of Emil Cioran’s works, the Romanian philosopher exiled in France since 1937, represents a real challenge to the relation between linguistic imaginaries and literary writing. Through an analysis of the paratextual elements that are related to the Italian translation of Cioran’s essay Écartèlement, this article provides a reflection on the translation of the language of exile following two axes: the linguistic imaginary and the cultural imaginaries, including implicit ideology, involved in the translation project in relation to the publishing world, the reader’s reception and his horizon of expectations. |
