Description
Summary:AN UNFULFILLED TRANSLATOR: WHO WAS HELEN STANKIEWICZ ZAND? The article describes the story of Helen Stankiewicz Zand’s translation endeavours dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. It is not merely another contribution to the body of existing translator biographies. This article also aims to show that the absence of text – be it a text that was intended but never written or a text that was indeed completed but never published – can shed light on the dynamics of the literary translation field that Zand co-created as an emerging translator and a staunch advocate of the Polish culture in the United States. Each of the three reconstructions of her translation projects outlined in this article may be illuminating in determining what might have mitigated against the successful publication of her translations of Polish prose fiction.
