description Background: antibacterial resistance to antibiotics has shown an alarming increase in recent years and the study of medicinal plants has confirmed that they have an important therapeutic value.
Objective: to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the extract from the leaves of Myrcianthes hallii on Proteus spp.
Methods: an ethnobotanical study with an experimental design was carried out in 2018, in the microbiology laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences of the School of Biochemistry and Pharmacy of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Chimborazo. The collection of Myrcianthes hallii was carried out in the Lloa parish belonging to the Quito canton of the Pichincha province, located between 1,800 and 4,675 meters above sea level. For the phytochemical characterization of the selected plant species, it was collected, identified, conditioned and extracted with hydroalcoholic solvent for subsequent phytochemical screening. The evaluation of the antimicrobial activity was carried out with the hydroalcoholic extract, for which the disc diffusion method was used against Proteus spp.
Results: the phytochemical screening indicated the presence of catechins, tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids that are metabolites with antimicrobial activity. The extract showed antimicrobial activity against Proteus spp. The extracts of 25 %, 50 %, 75 % and 100 % presented inhibition halo from the lowest to the highest concentration.
Conclusion: the extract from the leaves of Myrcianthes hallii demonstrated to have antimicrobial activity in vitro against the test microorganisms. It is necessary to continue with clinical studies for its future use in medical formulations.
