| Summary: | Abstract: between 1866 and 1924, tens of thousands of Cretans, renegades assimilated to Turks because of their conversion to Islam, had to leave their island and became “half infidels” in Turkey where Kemal worked to Turkify them. Since the end of the 20th century, however, we witness the resurgence of a Cretan identity which pushes their grandchildren to present themselves as Turks and Cretan Muslims at the same time, while cultivating what is, or what they imagine to be, their Cretan heritage. The silence that covered these “unfaithful” to the two countries disappears, studies and exchanges multiply. It is this identity journey that is the subject of this article. |
