Effect of dietary Cucurbita pepo extract on performance, hemato-immunological parameters, immune-related gene expression and bacterial resistance in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss
The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Cucurbita pepo extract (CPE) on performance, blood parameters, immune responses, expression of immunity-related gene, and disease resistance in rainbow trout. The fish were fed with 0, 2, 4, and 6 % of CPE in 15 tanks (100 L) for 8 weeks. Fi...

Summary: | The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Cucurbita pepo extract (CPE) on performance, blood parameters, immune responses, expression of immunity-related gene, and disease resistance in rainbow trout. The fish were fed with 0, 2, 4, and 6 % of CPE in 15 tanks (100 L) for 8 weeks. Fish fed with 4 % of CPE showed significantly higher values of growth indices compared to control diet (P < 0.05). The highest hematocrit and hemoglobin contents were associated with the diet containing 4 % CPE. Similarly, dietary 4 % of CPE effectively increased lysozyme activity, and immunoglobulin content compared to the control diet. Furthermore, the highest mRNA level of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) was observed in 4 % CPE diet. Following the bacterial challenge, the highest relative percentage survival value was observed in fish fed with 4 % CPE. The current study demonstrated dietary incorporation of 4 % CPE can improve performance, hemato-immunological parameters and resistance of rainbow trout against Y. ruckeri infection. |
