description Foundation: high blood pressure constitutes a serious health problem worldwide, it has a high incidence in the adult population of most countries, the fundamental consequence of which is cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases.
Objective: to identify some atherosclerotic risk factors and subclinical atherosclerosis in hypertensive workers at the Clinical Research Center.
Method: an observational, cross-sectional study was carried out on 171 hypertensive workers from the Clinical Research Center. The following were studied: age, sex, body mass index, smoking habit, laboratory measurements that included: glycemia, total cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid. Carotid Doppler ultrasound was performed on each patient to diagnose subclinical atherosclerosis. The corresponding statistical analysis was carried out and the results were represented in tables and graphs for better understanding.
Results: 109 (63.8 %) were women in the study and 62 (36.2 %) were men. Among other risk factors, smoking, overweight and obesity were identified as the most frequent. In 28 patients, the presence of plaques was identified by carotid Doppler ultrasound (16.4 %) and 79 (46.2 %) had intima-media thickness greater than or equal to 1mm. Smoking, overweight and obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperuricemia were associated with the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: hypertensive patients presented some atherosclerotic risk factors, it was smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperuricemia that were related to the diagnosis of subclinical atherosclerosis.
