description Agricultural cooperatives (hereafter referred to as cooperatives) are a bridge for transforming new agricultural technologies into real productivity, and they are important in technology adoption among farmers. Clarifying the impact of cooperative membership on technology adoption is an important aspect of establishing micro incentives for technology adoption among farmers. In this paper, we use the propensity score matching (PSM) method of counterfactual inference to analyze how cooperative membership promotes technology adoption among farmers by changing their technology cognition. The results show that cooperative membership can promote the adoption of water-saving irrigation technology (WSIT). Significant between-group differences exist in the effect of cooperative membership on farmers' decision to adopt WSIT such that the promotion effect is greater among farmers with larger irrigated land areas, farmers with fewer years of farming experience, and farmers with lower education levels. Technology cognition significantly promotes farmers' technology adoption. The depth of technology cognition mediates the effect of cooperative membership on technology adoption among farmers such that cooperative membership leads farmers to deepen their technology cognition and indirectly promotes technology adoption among farmers.
