description Since the devastating storm Xynthia in 2010, coastal adaptation to natural hazards has become a policy priority. Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 revealed the specific vulnerability of the Caribbean to the effects of climate change. This has opened a new field of investigation for the project-based disciplines of urban planning, landscape design and architecture. How can the vulnerability of regions be reduced while facilitating their regeneration? Faced with this challenge, tropical islands are a special case: the many extreme hazards are exacerbated by climate change while the space available for adaptation is limited. In Martinique, communities fully aware of their vulnerability are determined to adapt to continue to live there. Since 2016, students studying for the degree in Advanced Architecture and Urban Planning at the National School of Architecture, of the Town and Territories of Paris-Est (in French, École d’architecture de la ville et des territoires Paris-Est) have conducted five prospective studies on the Martinique coast. Through a retrospective analysis of this body of research (context, methods and issues addressed), this article examines the role of experimentation in regional development projects.
